Heroes
and Celebrities
The ladies of the
reality television Basketball Wives are the popular culture icons I have
chosen, and the theory I think applies to them is fascination that comes with
being married to or dating a person who is a celebrity. Being able to have
access to exclusive restaurants, VIP treatment while you travel, private
planes, shopping sprees and the rest of the perks that we envision they are
given just because they are with a celebrity. Each of the cast members describe
how their lives became different from the life they were living previously,
some going from being extremely poor and now they are able to afford anything
they can dream of. On the other hand they also have experienced the pitfalls of
being in a relationship with someone in the spotlight. Most of them have also
had to experience some sort of infidelity that caused their relationship to
fail.
I think the insight
that we all gain from seeing the show is that fantasy is not always reality,
and just because you may marry a celebrity doesn’t mean that you are immune to
the same struggles others have.
