Written Analysis 5
The theme that seems to be closely related to the ladies on the show “Basketball Wives” is the fairytale myth that you marry your soul mate and they will live “happily ever after”. Watching movies that perpetuate those enchanted endings where the couple realizes they the love they have between them will conquer all only helps to continue the myth of the ending which most marriages in the age of popular culture won’t see.
The most interesting finding from the analysis is despite the reputation and the myths that surround celebrity athletes women still believe in the and hold on to the hope of the magical endings. I think that also comes from the lifestyle the women have been afforded to live after they become involved with an athlete.
When the show “Basketball Wives” first aired I thought I would only see the fabulous lives that these women lived with no stresses or problems, instead the analysis I am left with is even with wealth and privilege we still have common problems when it comes to the matter of  love,  marriage and hoping for the fairytale ending.

Rituals and Stereotypes

The assumption that seems to apply with the cast of ladies from Basketball Wives is that by engaging in the ritual of marriage they would live happily ever after. The fantasy of marrying a celebrity athlete and enjoying the rich and famous life sometimes clouds the reality of what the marriage may bring. Often they are left to deal with stereotype of an athlete that has multiple affairs, and also having numerous children with other women, which can often be the case.
In some of the cases of the women form the cast they never made it down the aisle, but they still believed in the popular culture ritual that because they had a child by a celebrity they eventually would get married.
These ladies and the stories they tell help people gain an insight to their life that marrying a celebrity and even having a child with one may not end with happily ever after.

Heroes and Celebrities
The ladies of the reality television Basketball Wives are the popular culture icons I have chosen, and the theory I think applies to them is fascination that comes with being married to or dating a person who is a celebrity. Being able to have access to exclusive restaurants, VIP treatment while you travel, private planes, shopping sprees and the rest of the perks that we envision they are given just because they are with a celebrity. Each of the cast members describe how their lives became different from the life they were living previously, some going from being extremely poor and now they are able to afford anything they can dream of. On the other hand they also have experienced the pitfalls of being in a relationship with someone in the spotlight. Most of them have also had to experience some sort of infidelity that caused their relationship to fail.
I think the insight that we all gain from seeing the show is that fantasy is not always reality, and just because you may marry a celebrity doesn’t mean that you are immune to the same struggles others have.

Assignment 1-3-2

Diagnosis Drama: Grey’s Anatomy, Blind Casting, and the Politics of Representation

The journal article Diagnosis Drama: Grey’s Anatomy, Blind Casting, and the Politics of Representation begin with praising the nearly thirty-eight million viewers who choose to watch the multi-racial cast instead of the Super Bowl post game celebrations. Using blind casting Shondra Rhimes assembled a diverse group of actors that was a marked contrast to the all white cast that appear in many television shows. The article reveals that Shondra, the only current African-American woman running a show on network television, had no preconceived physical description other than gender when they were casting members of the show. Shondra acknowledged, “We really read every color for every single part” (Diagnosis Drama, pg 1067).
Because of the cast diversity the article points out that show chooses to focus on the relationships built through friendships, shared experiences, professional responsibilities, or romantic love.
I think the article serves as an important example of how to change stereotypes that we each can have. Movies like “Boomerang” were criticized because some critics didn’t find it believable to see a successful corporation that was owned and operated by African-Americans, and also television show like “The Cosby Show”, were deemed unbelievable to see a thriving African-American two parent household, with flourishing children.  When casting directors can enter a room of actors with an open mind and regardless of color choose the best person for a role there will be many more movies and television show with more diverse cast.
The main points of the article were focused on how Shondra Rhimes allows her characters relationships to develop through their shared experiences, common strengths, and romance which I agree is the reason why the show is so popular to so many people from different cultures.
The article Diagnosis Drama; Grey’s Anatomy, Blind Casting, and the Politics of Representation is important to read because it give you an idea about how stereotypes are continued when you only portray certain characters by certain races. Depicting many races in out of the ordinary character roles can make a difference in the way each race stereotype continues to be viewed in the media.

Icon Analysis 1

The Greatest and my older brother Gary Thurman(first base coach for the Miami Marlins)
Three contemporary icons that I would Like to identify are Muhammad Ali, Facebook, and the Olympic rings.

"The Greatest" Muhammad Ali is the first and only three time World Heavyweight Champion, but he is also a humanitarian, and a social activist. What makes him such an icon in my opinion is that in 1967 he sacrificed his career of being the World Heavyweight Champion because of his religious beliefs. Facebook has been a such a positive experience for me because it has allows me to stay current with family and friends that I don't get to see regularly. And the Olympic rings are a symbol of my passion for athletics and the sacrifices an athlete makes to accomplish there dreams of competing and possibly winning an Olympic metal.

I choose these three contemporary icons because they have affected me personally. Muhammad Ali has been an inspiration to me throughout my life. I was an athlete in high school and his story was one that always continued to motivate me. Facebook has made the world a much smaller place for me,and allowed me to maintain meaning full contact with my family in California and friends all over the world.  The Olympic rings are special because I have a friend that I ran relays with in high school that actually went on to win an Olympic gold metal in 1996.

The three icons I choose have a positive and enthusiastic response from me. I think they are icon that have made a change in society regardless of race, religion or gender. The icons have faced adversity and still continue add contributions to the world.

Popular Culture Artifact

Popular culture is observing what is going on in society around the world that we live in today. It includes television, politics, technology, food, language and many more topics. Popular culture can sometimes designate cultural guides that are followed.

Popular culture is relevant in my career field because I work part-time in a special events department and I'm also a part-time bartender. Being able to use current ideas when planning a event helps keep your clients satisfied and ensure them that you understand what is happening in our industry. As a bartender staying current on popular culture issues is a way to strike up conversations with your customers and also can be a way to start networking .

The popular culture artifact that I chose is the cast members of the reality television show Basketball Wives.
It is a show that has a cast of African-American women(which I am one of). The artifact continues to show how much we like to see reality television and how much these show have become part of popular culture.
