"The Greatest" Muhammad Ali is the first and only three time World Heavyweight Champion, but he is also a humanitarian, and a social activist. What makes him such an icon in my opinion is that in 1967 he sacrificed his career of being the World Heavyweight Champion because of his religious beliefs. Facebook has been a such a positive experience for me because it has allows me to stay current with family and friends that I don't get to see regularly. And the Olympic rings are a symbol of my passion for athletics and the sacrifices an athlete makes to accomplish there dreams of competing and possibly winning an Olympic metal.
I choose these three contemporary icons because they have affected me personally. Muhammad Ali has been an inspiration to me throughout my life. I was an athlete in high school and his story was one that always continued to motivate me. Facebook has made the world a much smaller place for me,and allowed me to maintain meaning full contact with my family in California and friends all over the world. The Olympic rings are special because I have a friend that I ran relays with in high school that actually went on to win an Olympic gold metal in 1996.
The three icons I choose have a positive and enthusiastic response from me. I think they are icon that have made a change in society regardless of race, religion or gender. The icons have faced adversity and still continue add contributions to the world.
